Prof. Tom Cotter

Professor (Emeritus) of Biochemistry & Staff Ombudsman, School of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, University College Cork

Prof. Cotter, graduated with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from University College Cork before completing a Ph.D. at the University of Oxford where he was a Pirie-Reid Scholar.  Following positions in the USA (Post-Doctoral & subsequently Fullbright visiting Professor) and Ireland, he is currently Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry and Staff Ombudsman at University College Cork.

Professor Cotter was awarded the Boyle Medal for his work in 1999, Royal Irish Academy Medal for Biochemistry in 2002 and was elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 2005. His main research interests are in understanding cell death & survival mechanisms. Prof. Cotter is also co-founder of two start-up biotechnology companies. He has also served on the Boards of Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board of Ireland, Cancer Research Ireland, Meridian Theatre Company and currently sits on several international Scientific Advisory Boards. He is also a former President of the IACR.  He has published more than 200 research papers.
