Bridget Carr

Bridget Carr

UCD PPI Group Partner

Bridget lives in Limerick with her husband JJ and two children Orla and Jack. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in January 2019 and following her treatment and recovery, sought support from women who were going through the same thing as her.
This led to Bridget joining Ovacare, where Adele (a PhD student from UCD) joined a coffee and chat support meeting to present her research idea and raise the idea of patient involvement. Bridget decided to put her name forward, and has since helped to shape ovarian cancer research by sharing her lived experience with the disease.

Bridget says “From the very beginning it has been such a positive experience. Our involvement is meaningful and it is very rewarding to know you have helped shape ovarian cancer research by sharing your story of your lived experience of this disease. Getting involved in PPI in UCD has been a wonderful, exciting experience and has given me some great opportunities. It has led me to get involved in many other PPI projects and committees.” Bridget has contributed to the painting by Vincent Devine The Vitruvian: Uncovering the Layers of Cancer for Science Week 2023 and has spoken about this at an event held in Dundrum Town Centre. She has also co-authored a publication on PPI in lab-based research and was invited to speak about this at a Patient Engagement Journal Club in Canada. Bridget was awarded the Laura Brennan Award by the Irish Society of Gynaecologic Oncology as a recognition of outstanding achievement for public and patient involvement in research.
